Are YOU Considering Buying A Franchise?

Before You Even Think About Buying Into A
Franchise, There Is Something Very
Important You Need To Know

“Here’s how to avoid 90% of the mistakes
new franchise entrepreneurs make”

Not all franchises are created equal. Choose the wrong one, and it could cost you much more than money

That’s right! Choose the wrong franchise, and it could cost you your investment, your savings your home, and even your sanity. Not to mention the stress, and strain it could put on your relationship with friends and family.

My name is Rick Bisio and for the next few minutes I’d like to help steer you in the right direction by revealing a few facts about franchising. I wish I had this knowledge before I started out, but now that I’m a successful franchise coach, you can benefit from my personal experiences.

Why you MUST find out all you can about franchising

I certainly don’t want to put you off the idea of buying a franchise because if you choose the right one, it can provide you with a significant income and a 5-star lifestyle to match.

There are some great franchises out there but when you take a deep dive,It quickly becomes apparent that while some are great, others are clearly not. Also, the franchise needs to fit you. Just because the franchises are great for your friend Mary. It may not be great for you. The problem is… how do you know which one to choose?

So, that’s the subject I want to cover right here, and right now. BEFORE you make the wrong decision… are you with me?

Good! Okay, so before I begin, my first piece of advice is to make sure you find out ALL the facts, figures, and realities of your target franchise business venture.

That might seem straightforward enough but you would be surprised at how many people just dive “Gung Ho” into the first opportunity they come across without doing their homework.

Needless to say most of them pay dearly for their blinded enthusiasm.

So why should you listen to me?

Well, for more than 20 years I’ve been successfully running a franchise consulting business alongside some of my own franchises. So, I know a thing or two about franchising. In fact I know quite a bit about business in general. Let me explain…

I first started a business when I was in 7th grade. Yes it’s true! I was buying packs of 5 pieces of gum for 25 cents, and then I was selling them to other kids for 10 cents apiece. Now that’s what I call a good profit.

I learned that from my dad who was also a businessman. He ran a hair styling business. My uncle was also in business so I guess I come from a family of entrepreneurs. Business is in my blood. However, the kind of money they made was okay but not exactly life-changing.

The corporate life was not for me

So, my first experience of doing business was to become my foundation, from which I would build on later. At such a tender age I had already learned about the art of buying low, and selling high, and although problems arose from time to time I was able to overcome, and stay positive.

So, fast-forward a little to when I graduated from Washington university with a business degree...

My first taste of corporate America came when I joined the Monsanto Corporation. What an experience that turned out to be. It wasn’t long before I realized that being part of a cog in a machine was definitely not the life for me.

There were too many rules and regulations and everyone had to play it by the book. You simply had to do as you were told, tow the line, and don’t make waves. I felt as though I had become someone else’s property.

One of the worst things about being part of a large corporation is you don’t really matter that much. If the company decides to sell out to another company then you are sold too. If the company decides to downsize then you could end up with no job. It’s totally ruthless!

Needless to say I had to get out of there

Now, aged 25 I was on the lookout for a new challenge, something I could really get involved with, and something that might help me develop my entrepreneurial skills.

So, with my work experience to date and my passion for business, I agreed to take on the exclusive distribution rights to a major European manufacturer of shower systems. The company was Bini, Italy’s largest shower system manufacturer.

So why am I telling you all this?

Well, here is where it all began for me…

My whole franchise experience was kinda born out of this job.

It wasn’t easy because I was a one-man-band trying to do everything. I mean I was organizing the supplies, trying to tie up deals with plumbing companies, and other outlets. I even went door to door trying to sell this stuff.

I was in at the deep end and so I had to learn fast!

I was having to attend trade shows to get the products out there into the market. Truth is, I was flogging myself to death, and just about breaking even. I had no choice but to sell up, and move on 2 years later but what I had learned from this experience made me realize that there are 2 ways to get into business.

You can either start up fresh with an idea, a service or a product range, and slowly build a business from the ground up, making mistakes all along the way, and wasting thousands of dollars in the process.

That’s exactly what I had been doing for the past 2 years.

Or, you can find the right business model that has already been planned, tried, tested, and proven to work, and just step right into it.

Franchising or starting a new business from scratch

I think if you want to work for yourself, and be your own boss then you have to look at both options. However, there are some very distinct advantages, and disadvantages to both.

For example, starting a new business is very risky, costly, time-consuming, and can be fraught with all kinds of unforeseen problems, which could ultimately contribute to your business ending in failure.

Mine didn’t exactly fail but I had run out of steam, and I definitely wasn’t enjoying what I was doing.

How often do we hear about someone losing everything when their business goes down the John? Way too often!

In the US, one in every five new businesses will fail within the first year, and a further 50% will crash within five years.

Starting your own business might sound interesting, and exciting at first but when you realize that you might have to work harder than you did in your regular day job, and take on a lot more responsibility, it’s really not quite so glamourous.

On top of that you might find that you have to work long hours for little reward, especially during the first 12 months.

So, what I’m trying to do here is to help you understand the difference between a bootstrap start-up business versus a formatted business approach.

Benefits of owning a franchise

So, if you compare the two options, there is one thing that really stands out between the two, and it’s a game changer. Do you know what it is?

It’s the level of risk!

Risk is something you must always consider when planning to start out on your own. With a franchise there is much less risk, providing you choose the right franchise of course.

So what should you look for in a franchise?

A franchise has all kinds of instantly recognisable benefits such as a recognised brand with an established reputation.

  • Low cost advertising and marketing because you only pay a contribution and not the full costs.
  • No prior business experience is necessary as all training is usually provided, based on a tried and tested success formula.
  • You get all the benefits of owning a small business backed by a much bigger business network.
  • It’s much easier to secure financing for a franchise than it is for a new start-up business.
  • Statistics show that franchises have a much higher rate of success than a new start-up.

So it’s a no-brainer right? Well, yes… and no!

Finally, a step in the right direction.

Look, nothing is ever clear cut, especially in business, and I’m not going to pretend that every franchise is going to offer you the kind of lifestyle that you might expect. It’s not always that simple.

What I will say though is that once you weigh up the pros and cons of starting a new business to stepping into a readymade business model then the franchise option does have a lot going for it.

In 1994, after completing my master’s degree in International Business, I was hired by a company called AFC Enterprises Inc. And my job title was director of international franchise development. Finally, a step in the right direction.

AFC Enterprises, is the franchisor, and operator of Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits. It’s the world’s second-largest quick-service chicken concept based on number of units. In October, 2007, Popeyes was quoted as having 1,881 restaurants in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and 24 foreign countries.

So, I still didn’t know a great deal about franchising at this stage but I did have business experience, and I had worked on the inside of corporate America, plus I had international experience, so it was all coming together . . . in a strange kinda way.

I’ve travelled the world…

Working for AFC was a real opener. I was traveling around the world, meeting with business leaders, community leaders, highly successful companies, and rubbing shoulders with some of the most successful franchising experts in the world.

My job was to promote the franchise, and get it operating is as many countries outside the US as possible. During my 6 years with AFC, I learned so much about franchising, including the law, compliance, and how to set up a franchise the right way. I’ll be forever grateful to the people I worked with during my time at AFC.

So, can you see how my working life progressed through the trials, and tribulations of business? By finding out what I didn’t want to do, I found out exactly what I did want to do with my life.

Now, because I have been fortunate to learn a heck of a lot of stuff about franchising, I have decided to help people like you get started on the right track. And believe me . . . I’ve picked up some real golden nuggets of information along the way.

I’ve worked on both sides of the franchise

When I moved on from AFC, I joined a small franchise company. The remit was to turn it around, and make it work, make it profitable, and grow the business. Well, another lesson learned there. Sometimes you just can’t achieve the impossible.

I could see the problems this company had, and it seemed inevitable that it would fail, which it did. It lacked the solid foundation that a franchise needs if it is to survive, and prosper.

So, I’ve now had a good grounding of franchises from both sides of the fence. That is to say I have worked at the top level, from the franchisor’s perspective, and at the grass roots level. I’ve experienced the highs and the lows, and I’ve got the proverbial Tee shirts to prove it.

So, it was time for me to immerse myself in the franchise business, and become a franchise consultant. That was back in 2002. Even now, if you do a search you won’t find many franchise consultants, and certainly none with the level of experience I have.

So I see myself as well qualified to helping and advising others.

Everything you wanted to know and a few things you didn’t know…

Okay, so if you have been with me thus far then you are obviously still interested in buying a franchise and you want to know more… right? Well to be honest I could go on and on telling you about my personal experiences but what you want to know is what’s in it for you.

You want to know what types of franchises there are, and which one is right for you.

You want to know about the risk factors, and the initial investments. You’ll want to know about ongoing fees, if any. You probably also want to know about whether the franchise you are considering has growth potential. If there is no room for growth then it might not be the best option.

You’ll want to know about the franchise agreements, and disclosure documents. You’ll want to know about your territory, and any restrictions. In fact you’ll really want to know about the legal structure, and framework that the franchise is built on.

Yes so many questions, I know. I would want to know about all this stuff too if I was just starting out or considering buying a franchise. And that’s why I have documented everything for you.

Quite simply, I’m the number one “Go-To Guy” for up-to-the-minute franchise information, and advice in the US.

I’ve been helping people all over the world set up and run successful franchises… the right way…. the profitable way.

I’ve traveled to over 30 countries franchising Popeye's Chicken and Biscuits, Church's Chicken, Seattle's Best Coffee and Cinnabon.

I have helped thousands of ordinary people break free from the wage slave mentality, to become financially independent traders.

For more than 20 years, I have run my own consulting franchise, and I’m recognised as one of the most influential, and successful franchise coaches around today.

So, what do people do after they become really successful at something?

They write a book about it, and then share their skills, experience, and insider knowledge with the world. Well, that’s where we’re at right now.

Helping you make all the right decisions

When I first wrote my book, there were very few books available on the subject of franchising. I could see that there was a real need for genuine information, and advice to help people make the right decisions.

My mission was to take the individual through a process, a kind of discovery process to help them understand whether franchising's for them.

And if so, how do you actually tear a franchise company apart? How do you determine if the franchise is a quality organization or an organization that you should probably leave well alone?

Today, my book is in its third edition because the franchise system has evolved over many, many years to be very detailed, and now The Educated Franchisee book is just the starting point.

During the last 20 years, I've had ownership in multiple franchises, and also been on the franchisor side as well as a franchise coach. What I have learned and the information I provide in my book is invaluable to anyone starting out in franchising.

The Educated Franchisee contains a multitude of resources designed to inform, educate, advise, recommend, and steer you safely onto the path of a very lucrative career as a successful franchisee.
